Wolford: The Austrian Atelier That Turned Hosiery Into High Fashion

Since 1950, Wolford has operated from Bregenz, a small city on the edge of Lake Constance in the Austrian Alps — and that geography tells you something important about the brand. There is a precision to the place, a quiet seriousness, that permeates every knit. Wolford doesn't follow seasonal trends in the conventional sense. Instead, it engineers textiles: developing proprietary yarns, refining tension structures, and producing hosiery that behaves less like an accessory and more like a second skin.

What distinguishes Wolford's luxury hosiery from anything you'd find on a department store rack is the density of craft invisibly embedded in each pair. Their tights are knitted on circular machines calibrated to fractions of a millimetre, with graduated compression built in at the ankle and calf — not for athletic performance, but for the way it shapes the leg and prevents the fabric from pooling. The result is a fit that stays precisely where it was designed to sit, all day.

The Stardust Crystal Embellished Tights are perhaps the most theatrical expression of what Wolford can do. Each crystal is individually set into a sheer black base — the kind of detail that reads as luminous under evening light without ever feeling costumed. These are the tights to reach for when a dress is doing something simple and the leg needs to carry the interest: think a column silhouette in matte crepe, or a slip dress worn to a winter dinner. At Lola Dré, they sit at the more considered end of our hosiery edit — an investment in an effect that genuinely cannot be replicated at a lower price point.

For those who prefer their hosiery to do its work quietly, Wolford's back-seam and sheer styles offer a different kind of sophistication — the kind built on restraint.

The Individual 10 Back Seam Tights draw from the mid-century tradition of fully-fashioned stockings — the single vertical seam running the length of the leg is a direct reference to the era before seamless knitting technology existed, repurposed here as a deliberate style gesture. At 10 denier, the base is barely-there sheer, making the seam the sole visual element. They work equally well beneath a tailored trouser (where only a flash of seam at the ankle is visible) or with a pencil skirt when the full line is meant to be seen.

The Twenties Econyl Fishnet Tights are worth noting for more than their aesthetic. Econyl is a regenerated nylon yarn produced from recovered ocean waste and industrial plastic — Wolford has integrated it into several core styles as part of their Aurora sustainability programme. The fishnet itself has an open, fine-gauge grid that's proportioned for versatility: substantial enough to read as a statement under a mini, refined enough to layer under wide-leg trousers without adding bulk.

Wolford's textured and patterned styles complete the range with options that reward a closer look.

The Diamond Jacquard Knit Tights use a cotton-blend yarn knitted in a raised argyle-adjacent diamond pattern — the texture is tactile enough to be interesting in isolation but structured enough not to compete with bold prints. The Shimmer Silver Dot Tights catch light through tiny metallic dots woven into a sheer base, offering a subtler alternative to the Stardust for those who want eveningwear hosiery with less drama. And the Control Geometric Dot Tights incorporate light shaping at the waist and thigh without the rigidity of traditional control hosiery — the dot pattern is a visual counterpoint to what is, functionally, a very wearable everyday tight.

Hosiery has long been the most overlooked category in a considered wardrobe — and Wolford has spent seven decades making the case that it shouldn't be. The full range is available to explore at Lola Dré, from entry-level sheer styles to the brand's most intricate evening pieces.
